Pelican is Rescued - Sunday, November 1, 2009
A wounded pelican with a broken wing arrived to the Quarters Barge Mag IV facility on a November morning. The crew defrosted fish and proceeded to feed the injured bird. After eating, the bird fled, but was back by afternoon and it was clear that he needed medical attention. Two of the crew members were able to approach the pelican with little resistance, applied minor dressing to the wing and released the bird. The crew decided to name their friend, Wounded Knee.
The concerned team caring for Wounded Knee contacted the Audubon Nature Institute. A representative from the Institute traveled to Venice to retrieve the pelican for transfer to their New Orleans facility for proper care and rehabilitation. We would like to extend our gratitude to the crew members and the Audubon Nature Institute for their care of Louisiana's wildlife.
